Chef Halimah Featured In The Sunday Times

Through the Vegetarian Society Singapore, Halimah was contacted in October 2008 by The Sunday Times to feature her renowned Vegan Briyani (using mock mutton). The interview with the reporter was very fun and candid, and the resulting report that appeared on 26th October 2008 did justice to both the dish and the chef. The report is reproduced below for your viewing pleasure.

The Vegetarian Experience

On 12th July 2008, a fine Saturday, Kalavira was invited to participate in The Vegetarian Experience, a charity food fair organised by the Mun Fut Tong Nursing Home. The day-long event saw over 100 stalls setting up shop under a massive tent at the open field opposite Serangoon Plaza, along Serangoon road.

Preparing the night before, Halimah and her team worked tirelessly through the night to prepare and pack close to 500 cupcakes (in 4 flavours) and 100 chocolate mousses. Then, early in the morning, all the lovely delicacies were transported to the location and the stall was set up. The crowd picked up and by 12pm, the entire fair was bustling with activity.

Many of the visitors were very intrigued by our products - and packaging, with many questions on whether there was egg and milk contained in the cupcakes. Notably, we had to explain - sometimes twice over - that, no, there were no eggs, milk or butter used. Many could not believe that they tasted just as good as 'real' cupcakes and were clearly impressed.

Some of Halimah's friends from the Vegetarian Society of Singapore (VSS) forums dropped by to lend their support as well. There was also a private film crew representing Supreme Master TV on site who interviewed the Kalavira team. One member of public who sincerely impressed us was an elderly gentleman who informed us that he has been a Vegan for several decades and who truly appreciated our attempts to bring the simple pleasures to the Vegan comunity.

The cupcakes sold incredibly fast and by 3pm, we were sold out. All proceeds were duly handed over to the Nursing Home and the team, although tired, came away feeeling fulfilled and proud of their contribution. A good day for cupcakes, charity and vegans, The Vegetarian Experience was certainly worthwhile.
